The price of being 'Edgy'

I let the hype get the better of me and decided to upgrade my notebook from Dapper to Edgy. Oops - it seems that Python 2.3.x isn't edgy enough for Edgy, so all of my development Zope instances were dead after the upgrade. Built my own Python 2.3.5 from source, installed to my Zope dev directory with everything else, but then my old Zopes complained because they were built with a different Python, so I had to rebuild those as well.

Really not too major... it took less than an hour to find and compile everything I needed, and now things are working almost exactly as they did before the upgrade. The only really annoying difference is that my IPython shells are missing color and auto-indenting, I think maybe because I was missing the readline dev packages when I built Python. So, I think maybe one more pass at this will get me to where I was before.

I definitely like the idea of a dedicated Python environment for my Zope stuff... I can easy_install new packages into it without worrying about conflicts from Edgy's official packages, and I don't have to worry about a repeat of this whole ordeal when the next upgrade comes along.

The only other negative side-effect of the upgrade was I lost my 3D acceleration, but that was easily fixed. Overall, I'm pleased with the new version of Ubuntu - just about everything is newer, shinier and - most importantly - faster.
